A contractor quoting a repair on central AC in Haywood County has to settle one question before anything else: what actually wore this system down. 41 severe weather events were recorded in Haywood County, Tennessee between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is something a system here encounters now and then, not a grinding constant. The compressor that gave out last August was almost certainly undone by years of deferred maintenance or the slow fatigue of age, and a contractor who opens the unit will find evidence of one or the other written in the components themselves.

Ductwork in a house this old has a history the repair ticket does not show. Half the homes in Haywood County, Tennessee were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pulling a failing capacitor or a bad contactor will get to the unit fast enough, but if airflow readings are off or the system keeps cycling, the ducts are the next thing opened, not the next job. What they find there, whether the runs are sound or have been leaking for years, determines whether the repair holds or whether the homeowner is back on the phone in a season.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks During a Repair

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing interior ductwork, an indoor air handler and furniture, connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad along an exterior wall, and it carries the compressor and the condenser coil. The compressor is the piece contractors check early when a system runs but does not cool, and the condenser coil is a common source of trouble when airflow across it is blocked or the fins are damaged.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower. The evaporator coil sits above the furnace or in a dedicated cabinet and is where refrigerant does its work. The blower moves conditioned air into the ducts. The refrigerant lines run between the two units, and the expansion valve and the thermostat round out the parts a contractor traces when something is off.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to the specific equipment and configuration in your house.
